bicycle day

As I get ready to turn in for the night I feel that I want to share with you my first ever drawing done while on an enlightening bike ride on bicycle day. Its a lot broader strokes than I usually take. I think its pretty interesting to see how different environmental factors can alter your art :)

The ruins of Discordia

This painting was one begun with no intentions other than to paint.
I was at Valentine's Day art workshop at CoSM where we were supposed to be making an art piece together with the one we loved but my One had some unstoppable inspiration to continue work on his first ever acrylic painting so I wasn't gonna do anything but encourage that. While he was working on that I kept myself busy :)
I first laid down a coat of red paint over the entire canvas because it isn't a background color that I usually choose. Then I just sat and rotated the canvas until something begged to be filled in. It all started with the tree, it sprouted from the cliff that then rose from the ocean. As I was staring at the painting i could see the lines of a woman in the tree so she became a ruined statue that the tree had grown around. And what does a ruined statue need more than a ruined temple to go around it. So in came the little details of moss, crumble and age. I then saw that something was missing and because of my wonderful friend Nicole I knew the story or Discordia and realized that my painting was missing a golden apple. I painted the apple in where it dangles both from the tree and from the fingers of ruined Discordia herself. So there's a little taste of that days creative process. It is always different from day to day, hour to hour and moment to moment and of course relies heavily on the medium I'm working with.

Woven bead necklace

I just noticed that i have yet to put any of my beaded jewelry up on my blog yet so now its time to change that :) Earlier in the month i gave myself the goal of learning a new bead weave pattern each week and this necklace is one of the results of that month.

Upcycled Alex Grey greeting cards

Apparently I am in an eco mood cause once again Alex Grey inspired me to repurpose some of his art but this time and unexpected material. I punched out 1" circles of a stack of Alex Grey Gift cards. I then sealed them together so that each token is double sided and long lasting. After hole punching them I added jump rings and made both a pair of dangle earrings and a necklace. It makes the most satisfying sound when it moves on your neck. I don't have a picture of the earrings yet but here's the necklace.

Repurposed Alex Grey art

I had this 'skull fetus' (created by Alex Grey) necklace and while mind blowing on its own I was struck with the idea of adding a little sparkle. Being a magpie of types I love all things shiny :). I will never be able to make this particular one again as I don't know where I found the metal circle I wrapped it into and have had it knocking around for years. But that is the wonder of found object, upcycling and multi-media art.
